This homemade spaghetti sauce is the most delicious pasta sauce. It’s perfect for topping on spaghetti noodles, filling a lasagna or stuffed shells. Made with love, a bit of patience and a lot of flavor, this spaghetti sauce is ready to feed a crowd.

Food was and still is a big part of my relationship with my husband. My husband grew up in a family of five children and when I first met him, he really only knew how to cook for large amounts of people. Hence, the spaghetti sauce to feed a crowd. This spaghetti sauce is one of my favorite things he cooks. On Sunday afternoons, you can smell the giant pot of spaghetti sauce bubbling away in the kitchen.
Spaghetti Sauce to Feed a Crowd
Fair warning: this sauce makes 16 cups of sauce! This is not a rush home from work and throw this on the stove kind of spaghetti. Now, before you jump ship…think of this sauce as batch cooking on Sunday. You can make this sauce one time and you have 1) spaghetti for dinner that night and 2) another batch to freeze for other pasta dishes like lasagna or stuffed shells. These large batch meals ultimately save you time because you are cooking one time, but get several meals of out your effort.
How to Make this Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
This homemade spaghetti sauce is really simple to make. Just follow the steps below.
- In a large pot, add a 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil to the pot
- Cook the beef and the onions together
- Drain any grease out of the beef and return back to the pot
- Add the minced garlic
- Add your tomato sauce and tomato paste
- Fill up one large can of tomato sauce about 3/4 of the way with water and use the water to pour into each can/container to get the remaining tomato sauce and paste out. Add the tomato water to the pot.
- Add your seasonings (salt, pepper, oregano, basil and sugar)
- Simmer for 2-4 hours
Ideas for Leftover Spaghetti Sauce
This spaghetti sauce is good in the freezer for 4-6 months. You can freeze it flat in an freezer plastic bag or in an airtight container. When you are ready to use the spaghetti sauce, you can pull out the sauce for another spaghetti dinner, make lasagna, or try these Easy Stuffed Ricotta Shells.
Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
Ingredients
- 1/2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 large onion
- 3-4 cloves garlic
- 4 15 1/2 oz cans of tomato sauce
- 2 10 oz cans of tomato paste
- 10 oz water (fill up 15 oz can about 3/4 way)
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tsp pepper
- 2 tbsp oregano
- 2 tbsp fresh basil or 1 tbsp of dried basil
- 2 tsp sugar
Instructions
- In a large pot, add 1/2 tbsp of olive oil
- On medium heat, cook the beef and onions together
- Drain the beef and onions to remove any grease and return to the pot
- Add garlic
- Add your tomato sauce and tomato paste
- Add 10 oz (about 3/4 full in the 15 oz can) of water to your tomato sauce can/container and pour into each can of sauce and paste to get all of the remaining sauce and paste out of the cans. Add water to the pot.
- Add your seasonings (salt, pepper, oregano, basil and sugar
- Simmer for 2-4 hours on low
