A simple kitchen sink makeover. From a cluttered everyday kitchen sink to a minimalist stylish kitchen sink.
With everyone watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, I thought it would be a great time to show my latest kitchen sink makeover. Our family (mostly me) started working towards minimalism last year when my boss introduced to me to the 1,000 thing challenge. Essentially, you strive to get rid of 1,000 things. I think we have have far surpassed that number. I now focus on keeping things that I love and try to evaluate things I let enter my home. If things are causing clutter or have not been used, they go. It’s as simple as that.
Small Spaces
Whenever someone mentions they want to start purging their stuff, I always encourage them to start small. Although it is fun to watch shows like Tidying Up where you see piles of clothes, books and toys, it can be overwhelming for someone just starting. Maybe you start with a junk drawer, a linen closet or a kitchen sink.
Before
This what my kitchen sink looked like before the makeover. It’s not too bad but it feels cluttered to me. As a food blogger and cook for two hungry boys, I spend a lot of time at the kitchen sink. No, dishes do not bring me joy, but why not create a space that brings me joy. It makes the never-ending task like dishes a little more enjoyable.
After
This is my newly made over kitchen sink. I love how clean and minimal it feels. I’ll admit that style is not my thing. I don’t necessarily understand all the rules or what to put where. When I stumbled upon this blog: Studio McGee, I felt like I had practical tips to make my kitchen sink look good. They put together examples of kitchen sinks that they have styled, here. Their work is absolutely gorgeous and have practical tips for anyone wanting a stylish space. If you really want to get their detailed tips, check out their video below, “How to Style Your Kitchen.”
Tips for a Kitchen Sink Makeover
Here are a few of my tips for a kitchen sink makeover that I learned along the way.
- Remove everything first. This is a golden rule when trying to minimize, organize or style. You must start with a blank space.
- Add something natural. Adding a small plant like my basil plant helps bring freshness to the space and lightens up the area. We will see how long I can keep this one alive.
- Switch out branded bottles. I love marketing but you don’t need it in your home. Switch out the store bought branded bottles to amber glass bottles.
- Pretty kitchen towels. Y’all saw I still had my Halloween dish towel in the “before” picture, right? It is February. I am slowly upgrading my dish towels to new pretty dish towels.
- Chunk the old sponge. Sponges are gross but I use them out of habit. I am trying to use these bamboo kitchen brushes. They are better for the environment, cleanliness and just look much better.
